AI search optimization for a medical website is mostly good SEO that AI tools can read: Google's own 2026 guide says no special AEO or GEO tricks are needed. The 12 fixes below come in order. First make sure Google's AI features and ChatGPT's search crawler can reach and quote your pages, then make your treatment, provider and practice facts unmistakable, then measure with Search Console's Generative AI report. Skip llms.txt files and chopping pages into tiny chunks; Google says it needs neither.
Brand Lift 360 does this work for medical and aesthetic practices in Roseville and Greater Sacramento as AI search visibility (AEO). AI search optimization means making your website easy for AI assistants and Google's AI answers to find, understand and cite. You'll also see it called AEO (answer engine optimization) or GEO (generative engine optimization); our GEO vs. AEO vs. SEO guide explains the difference. The fixes below are the website side of it, in the order we work them.
What Does AI Search Optimization Change for a Medical Website?
Less than the acronyms suggest. Google's guide to its generative AI features, published in May 2026, says the best practices for SEO (search engine optimization, the work of getting pages found in search) “continue to be relevant.” A page needs to be indexed, meaning stored in Google's records, and eligible to show a snippet, the short text preview under a result. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Three things are different for a medical practice:
- ChatGPT has its own crawler. A crawler is a bot that reads web pages. OpenAI says sites that block its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
- Health pages are held to a higher bar. Google says its systems give even more weight to experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T) on topics that could affect people's health.
- Your profiles count as much as your pages. When we asked ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode three Sacramento patient questions on October 26, 2026, AI Mode cited the practices' own Google Business Profile descriptions, and ChatGPT named a dental specialist with only 14 reviews whose category matched the question.
Fixes 1 to 4: Make Sure AI Can Read You
These are the fastest fixes and the most important: if they fail, nothing else on this list matters.
1. Check the generative AI setting in Search Console
Google Search Console is Google's free report on how your site performs in search. It now has a Search generative AI control. Including your site is the default, and excluding it removes your links and content from Google's generative AI features. Open the setting once and confirm nobody switched it off.
2. Let OpenAI's search crawler in
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt, the text file that tells bots which pages they may read, and make sure OAI-SearchBot isn't under a “Disallow” line. Ask your host or developer whether a firewall setting labeled something like “block AI bots” is on. OpenAI says changes can take about 24 hours to register for search.
3. Remove snippet blocks from pages you want quoted
Google lets sites limit what it shows with the nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet settings, or keep a page out entirely with noindex. Those same settings limit what its AI features can use. Ask your developer to check that none is set on your treatment, provider or location pages. A setting applied site-wide by a plugin or theme affects every page.
4. Confirm your key pages are indexed
Paste each treatment and provider page into Search Console's URL Inspection tool. A page Google hasn't indexed can't be cited in its AI answers.
Fixes 5 to 8: Make Your Facts Unmistakable
5. Put your facts in text, not in images or PDFs
Treatments, starting prices, hours, insurance accepted, provider names and cities served belong in plain text on the page. A price list saved as an image or a PDF menu is harder for any engine to read and quote correctly.
6. Give each treatment its own page, answer first
Answer what it is, who it's for, what it costs and who performs it in the first two sentences, under a heading that uses the name patients search for. We show how in Med Spa SEO: How to Rank Treatment Pages Locally and Plastic Surgery SEO: Ranking Procedure Pages.
7. Name the people behind the care
Give every provider a page with credentials, license or board certification, and the procedures they perform. Put a named author or medical reviewer on every clinical article. Google “strongly encourages” accurate authorship information such as bylines, and asks whether it is self-evident who wrote the content.
8. Make your Google Business Profile match your website
Your Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your practice in Google Search and Maps. Google's AI guide says it can help your services appear in AI responses as well as regular results. Use the same specialty, treatment names and cities on both. See How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT for what the engines cited in our checks.
Fixes 9 to 11: Give AI a Reason to Repeat You
9. Write what only your practice can say
Google's guide asks for “non-commodity” content: your own knowledge and experience, not a restatement of what's already online. For a practice, that's your prices, your consultation process, how your providers choose between treatments and what recovery looks like in your office. “Benefits of Botox” copy that could sit on any site gives an AI no reason to cite you.
10. Keep claims you can support
The FTC says health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, and that testimonials showing better-than-typical results are likely deceptive. Its rule on consumer reviews, in effect since October 21, 2024, bans fake reviews. Pages that overpromise are a legal risk, and they aren't what you want an AI repeating about your practice.
11. Keep structured data accurate, and stop expecting FAQ stars
Structured data, also called schema, is code that labels your practice, services and providers for machines. Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features, and that structured data should match the visible text on the page. Google also stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026. Keep FAQs on your pages because patients read them, not for a search feature that no longer exists.
Fix 12: Measure It
Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows how many times links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, which pages earned them, and how that changes over time. For ChatGPT, write down five questions your patients ask, with your city, ask them monthly and save each answer with the date. Our How to Rank in ChatGPT checklist walks through the routine.
What to Skip
| Tactic | What Google or OpenAI says | Our call |
|---|---|---|
| llms.txt files | Google Search doesn't need them; they won't help or hurt visibility | Optional; not a priority |
| Chopping pages into tiny chunks | Google: “There's no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces” | Write normal pages with clear headings |
| Rewriting pages “for AI” | Google lists it among things you don't need to do | Rewrite for patients; that's what AI reads |
| Dozens of near-identical city or treatment pages | Google: making many pages to manipulate rankings or AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy | One strong page per treatment and per real location |
| Paying for mentions | Google lists seeking inauthentic mentions as unnecessary | Earn listings on the directories your specialty uses |
| Tools promising AI rankings | Google: “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems” | Measure with Search Console and dated answers |

Questions Practice Owners Ask
Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
Mostly no. Google says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO and that no special AEO or GEO tactics are needed. Two things differ: ChatGPT reads your site through OpenAI's own crawler, and success means being named or cited in an answer, not only ranking in a list.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Not for Google. Google says Search doesn't need llms.txt files and that they won't help or hurt your visibility or rankings. Other services may read one, so it's optional, but it isn't on our list of fixes.
Does schema markup help me show up in AI answers?
Google says no special schema markup is needed for its AI features. Keep accurate structured data for your practice and providers because it still supports regular rich results, and make sure it matches what the page visibly says.
How do I know if my practice shows up in Google AI Overviews?
Open Search Console's Generative AI performance report. It shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, date, country and device. For ChatGPT, ask your patients' questions monthly and save the dated answers.
Should I block AI bots to protect my content?
Decide crawler by crawler. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes your pages from ChatGPT search answers. Blocking GPTBot tells OpenAI not to use your content for training its models and doesn't remove you from search answers.
