GEO vs. AEO vs. SEO: What Changes for Medical Practices

SEO gets your practice ranked in Google’s list of links. AEO gets your content used as the direct answer. GEO gets your practice named inside the answers that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews write for patients. They aren’t competing strategies. For a 1–5 provider practice, they’re three layers of one job: being the practice an AI recommends when someone nearby asks about your treatment.

Brand Lift 360 provides AEO for medical and aesthetic practices in Roseville and Greater Sacramento. This is the explanation we give practice owners on their first call.

If you only remember one line: SEO gets you found, AEO gets you quoted, GEO gets you recommended.

SEO: Getting Ranked

SEO is the foundation. It means pages Google can crawl, one page per treatment and location, accurate practice information, a Google Business Profile, and reviews. Nothing in AEO or GEO works without it, because AI assistants read the same pages Google ranks. A practice with no treatment pages has nothing for an AI to cite.

For a small practice, local SEO matters most: the map pack, your Google Business Profile and treatment-plus-city pages. See our local SEO service.

AEO: Being the Answer

AEO is writing pages so that a search engine or AI can lift a clean answer from them. When a patient asks “how long does Botox last?” or “what is the recovery time for a tummy tuck?”, an AEO-ready page answers that question in its first two sentences, under a heading that matches the question, with structured data (code that labels the question and answer for machines).

AEO shows up as featured snippets, Google AI Overviews and voice-assistant answers. It’s the fastest of the three to influence, because it’s mostly about how your own pages are written.

GEO: Being Recommended

GEO is about what an AI assistant believes about your practice when it writes an answer like “best med spa in Roseville.” Those answers are built from many sources: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, review sites and articles that mention you. If those sources agree about who you are, what you do and where you are, the AI is more likely to name you. If they disagree or say nothing, it names someone else.

GEO rewards a practice that states the same specialty line everywhere, keeps its profiles complete and earns reviews and mentions. It takes longer than AEO because it depends on sources you don’t fully control.

What Changes for a Medical Practice

  • Your treatment pages become answer pages. Each one opens with a direct answer to the question patients ask, then the detail.
  • Your practice has one description everywhere. Website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles all say the same specialty, city and providers.
  • Providers become part of the content. AI assistants connect a surgeon or injector to a procedure and a location. Provider pages and credentials matter more than they used to.
  • Reviews feed AI, not just Maps. Review volume and recency are signals AI assistants weigh when recommending a practice.
  • You measure mentions, not only rankings. We capture dated AI answers for a fixed set of questions and track whether you’re named.

One of our allergy and asthma clients was first in the captured Google AI Overview and the first standard result for “best allergy clinic in san mateo.” A plastic surgery client is named in Google’s AI answer for its signature procedure. Both came from the same work: clear treatment pages, consistent practice information and provider details. See the case studies.

What to Do First

  1. Check where you stand. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google for the best practice for your top treatment in your city. Note whether you’re named. Our free AI visibility audit does this with dated screenshots.
  2. Fix the foundation. One crawlable page per treatment, a complete Google Business Profile, a steady review process.
  3. Rewrite the openings. Each treatment page answers its main question in the first two sentences.
  4. Make your facts match. The same specialty line, address, phone and providers on every profile.
  5. Re-check in 30 days. Same questions, same assistants, new screenshots.

Questions Practice Owners Ask

Do I still need SEO if I do AEO or GEO?

Yes. AI assistants read the same pages Google ranks. Google says the same SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode in its guidance on AI features in Search.

How long does AEO or GEO take to show results?

Changes to your own pages can appear in AI answers within weeks of being indexed. Being recommended consistently usually takes several months, because it depends on reviews, directories and mentions building up. Results vary by query, location and date.

Is this included in your plans?

Yes. AEO is included at no extra cost in Growth (from $1,499/month) and Authority. See plans and pricing.
