Therapist SEO: How to Show Up When Clients Search

Published Updated 7 min read

The short answer

Therapist SEO means showing up in two places: the directory profiles that hold the general searches, and your own specialty pages that win the specific ones. On November 1, 2026, six of the nine regular Google results for “therapist sacramento” were directories or review sites. For “couples counseling sacramento,” the picture flipped: six of nine were practice websites, two of them pages built just for couples counseling. So build one page for each kind of client you want more of, keep your directory profiles complete, and let both point to an easy consultation booking.

Brand Lift 360 does mental health marketing for private practices in Roseville and Greater Sacramento, including SEO. This guide covers the search side of therapist marketing, using real Sacramento search results. What Is Therapist SEO?

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of getting your pages to show up in Google’s results without paying for each click. For a therapist, it covers three things: the Google map results, the regular results below them, and the directory listings that often appear in both. A client who searches “couples counseling sacramento” is close to reaching out. SEO decides whether they find you or someone else.

Search volume tells you where to start. From Sacramento, “therapist near me” draws about 590 searches a month, “therapist sacramento” about 480 and “couples counseling sacramento” about 140 (Google Ads data through DataForSEO, November 2026).

General Searches vs. Specific Searches

On November 1, 2026, we pulled Google’s regular results, below the map, for two Sacramento searches through DataForSEO. We don’t name the practices.

What ranked“therapist sacramento”“couples counseling sacramento”
Practice homepages34
Practice pages for one specialty02
Therapist directories51
Review site (Yelp)11
University counseling page01
Total regular results on page one99

The lesson: you compete with directories on the general search and with other practices on the specific one. The specific search is the one a solo or group practice can realistically win, and the winners were pages that said exactly what the client typed.

The Therapist SEO Checklist

Eight checks, in the order we work through them.

1. One page for each kind of client you want more of

Couples counseling, anxiety, teens, trauma, perinatal mental health. Put the specialty and your city in the page title and main heading, as in “Couples Counseling in Sacramento.” Describe who it’s for, how you work, what the first session looks like, fees and insurance, and how to book a consultation.

2. A homepage that says who you help and where

Your city, your license types, the clients you see and whether you offer telehealth. Four of the nine results for the couples search were practice homepages, and every one of them mentioned couples work in the text Google showed.

3. A bio page for each clinician

Name, license type, training, approaches and who they see. Group practices win more specific searches when each clinician’s page is specific too.

4. Complete directory profiles that link to your site

Directories hold most of the general search, so your profile is your listing in those results. Keep the specialty, fees, insurance and openings the same as your website, and link to the matching specialty page where the directory allows it.

5. A Google Business Profile, if you see clients in person

Google treats therapists as individual practitioners who can have their own profile, and requires in-person contact with clients during stated hours. A group practice can have a profile for the practice and for each public-facing clinician.

6. Structured data

Structured data is code that states your practice name, address, phone and hours in a format search engines read directly. Use Google’s LocalBusiness structured data on your contact or location page.

7. Privacy-safe measurement

Measure consultation requests by page, not just visits. Keep ad pixels off contact and booking pages, which can expose client information. Our guide to therapist advertising covers tracking in more detail.

8. Fast, readable pages on a phone

Google indexes and ranks the mobile version of your site. Short paragraphs, a visible consultation button and a page that loads quickly matter more than design flourishes.

Should a Therapist Write Blog Posts?

A few, if each one answers a question clients ask before they book: what the first session is like, how out-of-network reimbursement works, the difference between a therapist and a psychiatrist, or how couples counseling starts. These articles help clients decide, and they give AI assistants like ChatGPT plain answers to repeat. Specialty pages come first. A blog with no specialty pages behind it rarely books clients.

SEO for Telehealth Practices

An online-only practice usually can’t have a Google Business Profile, because Google requires in-person contact during stated hours. That puts more weight on your website and directories. State clearly which states you’re licensed in, build specialty pages the same way, and use your directory profiles’ telehealth filters. Avoid a page for every city in the state that only swaps the city name: Google’s spam policies treat those as doorway pages.

Common Questions About Therapist SEO

Can a therapist’s website outrank Psychology Today?

For the general search, rarely: directories held most of page one for ‘therapist sacramento’ in our November 2026 check. For specific searches such as ‘couples counseling sacramento,’ practice websites held six of nine results, so a well-built specialty page can rank above the directories.

Should a therapist write blog posts for SEO?

A few, if they answer questions clients really ask before booking, such as what the first session is like or how out-of-network reimbursement works. Specialty pages come first; articles support them.

How does SEO work for a telehealth-only practice?

Without an office, a practice usually can’t have a Google Business Profile, so the website and directory profiles do the work. Build pages for each kind of client you see and state the states you are licensed in.

How long does therapist SEO take?

Directory and profile fixes can bring inquiries within weeks. New specialty pages usually take a few months to settle in the results. No one can guarantee a ranking.

What to Do This Week

Search your top specialty plus your city, such as “couples counseling sacramento,” on your phone. Note which practice pages rank and what their page titles say. If you don’t have a page for that specialty, outline one: who it’s for, how you work, the first session, fees and how to book. That page is your first SEO project.
